  The True Meaning of Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels

 

 

 

        The reasons why we take refuge can be explained from two aspects: First, taking refuge (guei yi) means returning to what you can rely on. From the perspective of Buddhadharma, sentient beings cycle through birth and death in the six realms of rebirth within the three realms of existence, like a homeless traveler who doesn’t know how to purify his inner vexations, and is therefore full of pain and suffering.
